Avodart (Dutasteride) – prostatic adenoma prophylaxis
Benign prostatic hypertrophy (prostatic adenoma) is a common urologic disease among men of mature age. According to World Health Organization a considerable growth of this disease has been recorded in men above 60. Avodart (Dutasteride) is a medication for treating and prevention of prostatic adenoma. It cause reduction in the prostate size, improves urination and decreases the risk of getting acute retention of urine. Avodart (Dutasteride) is a peroral medicine taken independently of food intake. The medicine is to be swallowed whole with some water. The recommended dose of Avodart (Dutasteride) is 0.5 mg (1 capsule) once a day. The treatment course duration is 6 months. Dutasteride could get absorbed through skin; that is why children and women should avoid contacts with the damaged capsules of Avodart. In case of a contact with a damaged capsule, the affected skin area should be washed with soap immediately.
Patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy who receives treatment with Avodart (Dutasteride) should necessarily have their prostate gland examined before and during the treatment course in order to avoid development of prostate cancer.
In 6 months Avodart (Dutasteride) reduces serum concentration of antigen in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy (even in case of prostate cancer) by 50 %. Dihydrotestosterone is the main androgen responsible for hypertrophy of the prostatic glandular tissue. Reduction of dihydrotestosterone rate in plasma is dose-dependent and could be noticed in 1-2 weeks after starting Avodart (Dutasteride).
