Alesse (levonorgestrel) – birth control medicine
Alesse (levonorgestrel) is a synthetic progestin. Alesse (levonorgestrel) causes changes in endometrium which lead to the disorder of the process of ovum embedding. The medicine also promotes viscosity growth of the cervical mucus which impedes sperm mobility. The tablets of Alesse (levonorgestrel) 0,75 mg are used as emergency contraception after sexual intercourse in case when the condom has been torn or in case of unprotected sexual contact. The medicine could be also used as a long-term contraception and as an additional method of contraception in women who use non-hormonal methods of birth control in case of objective or subjective reasons which do not allow them to use gestagenic and estrogenic contraceptives.
Alesse (levonorgestrel) 0,75 mg is taken within 72 hours after the unprotected sexual intercourse, then one more tablet is taken in 12 hours after the first one. The medicine is taken whole with some water. Alesse (levonorgestrel) should not be used if you have any of the following conditions: hypersensitivity, hormone-dependent tumor, susceptibility to thromboembolism, otosclerosis, acute diseases or liver tumor, infectious diseases affecting urogenital system, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Levonorgestrel in overweight patients is less effective.
