Periactin (Cyproheptadine) – effective allergy treatment
Periactin (Cyproheptadine) has an anticholinergic and antihistaminic action (inhibits H1 receptor), at the same time it is a strong anti- serotonin agent (reduces spasmogenic and other effects caused by serotonin). Periactin is especially effective for itching dermatosis (probably because of anti-serotonin action).
Periactin (Cyproheptadine) is used for treating of the following allergic conditions: acute and chronic hives, serum sickness, pollinosis (pollen disease), vasomotor rhinitis, contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, Milton’s disease, allergic reaction to medicines, etc. Other uses of the medicine include treating migraine, and appetite loss of various etiologies (neurogenic anorexia, chronic diseases, etc.). Periactin (Cyproheptadine) is also recommended for use in complex therapy for treating chronic pancreatitis. The dose of Periactin (Cyproheptadine) for adults is 4 mg(1 tablet) 3-4 times a day. The dosage for children depends on their age: the dose for babies from 6 months to 2 years old is o,4 mg/kg daily; 6 mg/day for children aged 2-6 years old(1/2 of a tablet taken 3 times a day); from 6 to 14 years old- up to12 mg/day (3 tablets a day). The daily dose of Periactin should not exceed 32 mg for adults, 8mg for children from 2 to 6, and 12mg for children aged 6-14. The medicine should not be used in patients with the following conditions: glaucoma (high intraocular pressure), stomach ulcer, pregnancy, urinary retention, susceptibility to edemas, asthmatic attacks.
